d. May 1, 2026

Bob Roy Mathews of Conover, North Carolina, passed away on May 1, 2026, at Springs of Catawba following a lengthy illness.

Born in Athens, Georgia, Bob was a standout athlete throughout his life, excelling in football and baseball during his high school and college years. He graduated from Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, with a degree in Chemistry and Biology. While at Presbyterian, he was affectionately known as “Gushy” by his classmates for his outgoing personality. He was elected President of his class and was voted “Best All Around.” He also completed the prestigious Darden Executive Marketing and Sales Program at the University of Virginia.

Bob was the son of the late Roy and “Jimmie” Mathews and was preceded in death by his brothers, Troy and Sam.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean; his children, Paige Woodward and husband Greg of Charlotte, Bob “Bart” Mathews Jr. and wife Patti of Atlanta, and Chad Mathews of Conover.

Bob built a distinguished career in the furniture industry, where he became a respected executive and leader. Along the way, he served as President of the International Textile Market Association and was a former board member of the Home Furnishings Council.

Bob was instrumental in the development of Rock Barn Country Club in Conover and remained a longtime member. He enjoyed testing his skills there, and at other courses throughout the United States and abroad, once beating the golf professional in a Pro-Am preceding the tournament.

More than any accomplishment, Bob cherished being a husband and father. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and creating lasting memories with those he loved.

A private graveside service celebrating Bob’s life was held with immediate family.
