Elizabeth Leon Darnell

August 3, 1945 — June 1, 2025

Hickory

Elizabeth Leon Hale Darnell, 79, of Hickory passed away Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Carolina Caring Catawba Valley Hospice House. Born August 3rd, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Walter Leon Hale and Mary Elizabeth Hale.

Elizabeth grew up as a preacher’s kid. Though her early years were humble, they were rich in love and faith. She was deeply devoted to her family—especially her boys—and to her church, where she joyfully served in many roles. She played the organ, sang in the choir, acted in church plays, and was a beloved part of Vacation Bible School. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she lived with purpose: to love Jesus and do His will, and to love and support her boys with everything she had.

Elizabeth had a passion for hospitality. She loved to cook and entertain, and her lasagna earned special praise from everyone who tried it. Her pot roast and strawberry pie were her son’s favorites. She also had a strong work ethic and took pride in her career, serving as Executive Secretary at Fluor Daniel. While she was recognized professionally for her dedication and accomplishments, what meant most to her were the lasting friendships and joyful memories made along the way.

She lived a full life marked by joy, generosity, faith, and resilience. Her many interests included embroidery, knitting, and crocheting. She lovingly tended rose gardens, adored all things related to Lady Diana and the British Royal Family, cheered for the Clemson Tigers, and devoted herself to daily Bible study.

She is survived by her sons, Tommy Hart of Hickory and John Hart of Decatur, GA; her grandchildren, Jay Hart (Kimmy) of Portsmouth, VA and Caleb Hart (Brianna) of Hickory, NC; her sisters, Nancy Alexander (Aaron) of Anderson, SC and Carolyn Gambrell (Jerry) of North Little Rock, AR; her late husband's sons, Stoney Darnell and Dallas Darnell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Billy Darnell, and her daughter-in-law, Ashley Hart.

Elizabeth leaves behind a legacy of unwavering love, faith, and kindness that will continue to inspire future generations.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Elizabeth’s honor to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
