Frankie Eugene “Trigger” Sigmon, 80, of Newton, passed away Friday, July 3, 2026, after a period of declining health. Born October 4, 1945, he was the son of the late Herbert Frank Sigmon and the late Dora Hedden Sigmon.
After graduating from Newton-Conover High School in 1964, he served two years in the U.S. Army as an MP in Frankfurt, Germany. Trigger loved nearly every sport, but he especially loved baseball, softball, and football. Besides playing American Legion baseball during high school, he coached Jaycee Midget Football and began playing men’s softball with the Four Lane Pool Room team. This was one of the most memorable times of his life, as he made many cherished, lifelong friendships.
His love of softball continued as he became an umpire for softball leagues throughout the Catawba Valley region and served as head coach of the Hanes Converting company softball team in Conover, where he retired in 2013 after 30 years of service.
Trigger wanted his love for softball to live on through his family. He was especially proud of his daughter and two granddaughters and loved watching them play the game. He passed down more than just a love for the sport he passed down the lessons of hard work, integrity, and kindness that softball taught him and hoped they would carry those values with them always.
He will be remembered for his love of sports, his sense of humor, and his ability to never meet a stranger.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sally Sigmon of the home; his daughter, Caroline Ingle (Wes) of Conover; and his two granddaughters, Elizabeth “Betsy (Liz)” Ingle and Georgia Ingle, both of Conover.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Herbert Frank Sigmon and Dora Hedden Sigmon.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church of Newton.
Memorials may be made to Catawba Valley Hospice. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff for the compassionate care they provided Frankie during his period of declining health.
