James (Jim) R. Stinson, 84, of Hickory passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at Trinity Ridge Nursing Home.
Jim was born in Tampa, Florida, on July 13, 1941. The second of six children, he was raised in Florida and Michigan. He graduated from Lincoln Park High School in Lincoln Park, Michigan. He earned a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University after transferring from Wayne State University. He attended graduate school at Duke University and later returned to college to earn a degree in electronics engineering from Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC).
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Jean Harrison Stinson; his father, Alec Stinson; his mother, Doris W. Albury; his stepfather, William R. Albury; two sisters, Anne E. Bowen and Kathleen M. Allen; and his brother, Edward A. Stinson.
He is survived by his daughter, Kim Stinson of Hickory; grandchildren, Amelia and Ella Hawn of Hickory; brother, Thomas E. Albury (Gale) of Maine; sister, Camille Moran of California; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Jim had many hobbies, including playing the guitar, drawing, and writing. He was constantly making puns and was a lover of crossword puzzles. He would buy crossword puzzle books and start at the back of the book with the most difficult puzzles. When the crosswords got too easy, he would move on to the next puzzle book.
He worked in manufacturing for many years, retiring from Corning. After retirement, he worked part-time at CVCC in the Writing Center, which he considered to be the most rewarding job he ever had as he had the privilege of helping students achieve their educational goals to better their lives.
To honor wishes of the family, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Jim are encouraged to donate to the hospice program at Carolina Caring whose staff expertly, and with great kindness, shepherded Jim through the last three months of his life.
