Jarrett Richard Clay

April 26, 1987 — August 15, 2025

Taylorsville

Jarrett Richard Clay, 38, of Taylorsville, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. Born April 26, 1987, he was the son of Louis Clifton Clay and Monique Lucille Clay.

Jarrett was a devoted husband and father who adored his family and lived his life fully for the Lord. He was active in ministry at Soma Church in Hickory, serving faithfully on the Brew Crew and as a driver for the Soma volunteer bus. His quick wit, kind smile, twinkling eyes, and signature beard endeared him to all who knew him.

His many passions included woodcarving, smoking delicious meats for friends and family, beekeeping, and mushroom hunting. He loved learning, sharing knowledge, and engaging in rich theological discussions. Jarrett was a true friend, mentor, and encourager to many. The passing of this gentle giant has left an immeasurable hole in countless hearts, yet we cling to the promise that we will see him again.

He is survived by his wife, Rachael Clay of the home; his children, Colby and Kyleigh Clay, both of the home; his parents, Louis and Monique Clay of Kings Mountain; his brothers, Benjamin Clay of Shelby and Jeremiah Clay of Bangkok, Thailand; his parents-in-law, Joe and Bobbie Cooksey of Tamassee, SC; his brother-in-law, Jourdan Cooksey of Tamassee, SC; his sisters-in-law, Serah Roy (of Greer, SC) and Devin Cooksey; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, E. Jeanne and Richmond Martineau, and his paternal grandparents, Mary Lee and Richard Clay.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:30 PM on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at Soma Church at Hollar Mill, 883 Highland Ave SE, Hickory, NC 28602. The family will receive friends from 2:00–4:00 PM prior to the service. The family requests guests wear colorful, uplifting clothing—semi-formal or dressy casual is encouraged, while black suits or traditional mourning wear are discouraged.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family through their GoFundMe at https://gofund.me/1fb72e8c.
