John Hickman
Van Zyl
Jun 4, 1980 — Oct 10, 2026
John Hickman Van Zyl, 46, passed away on October 10, 2026, leaving behind a life marked by quiet kindness, deep connections, and a genuine love for the people and simple joys around him.
John worked as a truck driver at LFR Grain and Chemical, where he found real happiness behind the wheel and in the easy conversations he shared with his farmer friends along the way. He had a soft spot for history, a love of horror films, and a deep appreciation for nature. Above all, he held a lasting affection for both the United States and the South African homeland that shaped him.
Those who knew John remember a beautiful soul with a kind heart. He had a special way of making people feel seen and valued, and his love for life shone through in the quiet, steady way he moved through the world.
When John met his wife, Ariel, something rare and true took root between them. Their love was meaningful and steady, and together they built a life filled with warmth, shared moments, and lasting memories. John also adored his fur babies—Frankie, Luke, and Sophie—who brought him daily joy and companionship.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Ariel van Zyl; his mother, Linelle Rautenbach; his brothers Pieter van Zyl (Wilma), Frikki van Zyl (Sheryl-Ann), Christo van Zyl, and Quintus van Zyl; his dear aunt, Helena van Zyl; his in-laws, Richard and Debbie Ferrell; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kim Young (Rob); his brother-in-law, Shane Ferrell (Nikki); and several nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John Hickman van Zyl and Ruby van Zyl; his maternal grandparents, Frik Roos and Vallary Roos; and his father, Christoffel van Zyl.
John will be deeply missed by everyone whose life he touched. His gentle spirit, warm presence, and the love he gave so freely will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
