Joyce Walker

Joyce Ann Walker
February 21, 1939 – December 14, 2023

Joyce Walker passed away on December 14, 2023. She was born in Charleston, West Virginia, and became a registered nurse after graduating from The Charlotte Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Joyce was married to Bobby Walker for 63 years, and they have two daughters, Cathy (Kevin) Tolbert and Kim Walker. Daniel Tolbert is her grandson, and Sue Plyer is her sister and lifelong best friend.

Joyce leaves behind many beloved family members and friends that she made during her long and vibrant life. She always treasured the connections she shared with the people close to her, and her gift for empathetically listening and advising was exceptional. Joyce enjoyed serving her community through her work as an industrial nurse and by volunteering with organizations including the Women’s Resource Center of Hickory, Meals on Wheels and the American Red Cross.

For decades she was a regular on the tennis courts at the Lake Hickory Country Club and Hickory City Park. Joyce was an environmentalist, interested in nature and conservation. She enjoyed gaming with her friends, and Tripoley was one of her favorites. An avid reader, she filled many shelves in her home with her large book collection. Joyce was wise and witty and could find humor in most situations. She was a spiritual person and enjoyed exploring and learning with her friends in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville.

Per her wishes, the family is not planning a public memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting an organization that Joyce valued. A few of those are:
