Juanita Cleo Smart

August 21, 1932 — April 4, 2025

Hickory

Juanita Cleo Floyd Smart, 92, of Hickory, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 4, 2025, at Carolina Caring Sherrills Ford Hospice House. Born on August 21, 1932, she was the daughter of the late James Roy Floyd and Vernie May Floyd.

Known to all as “Nanny,” Juanita lived up to the name in every possible way. She raised not only her own children and grandchildren, but great-grandchildren, neighborhood kids, and even strangers who needed a little love. Her nurturing heart and spirited nature left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Juanita was spunky, full of love and wisdom, quirky with an unforgettable sense of humor, and always quick with a comeback. She was hardworking, honorary in her own sweet way, and undoubtedly the kindest soul many had ever known.

She deeply loved the mountains, especially the areas of Cherokee and Pigeon Forge, and found her greatest joy in spending time with her grandkids. She also had an unshakable love for Jesus and her church, where she was known and cherished by many—especially her beloved Pastor Ken, who always made her feel special and brought her so much laughter.

In her later years, Juanita lost her hearing, but that never stopped her from connecting with people—if anything, it made her more memorable. She was known for unintentionally loud, hilarious outbursts during church services, which became endearing moments her loved ones will never forget.

Juanita had a passion for gardening and was known to have the greenest thumb. She especially loved orchids and calla lilies. She enjoyed word searches and was a fantastic baker—famous for her coconut cake and her cubed steak with gravy, both of which she took great pride in.

She often asked, “What day is it?” but now, she never has to ask again—she's rejoicing in a place where there’s no time, just everlasting peace and joy. Her other favorite phrase, “Well, whatever,” will echo in the hearts of those who knew her, a loving reminder of her sass and spirit.

Juanita cherished her grandson-in-law, Shaun, as if he were her own son, and took great pride in the love that bound her family together. She held her siblings close to her heart and often spoke fondly of her childhood growing up in the mill village of Hildebran. Her great-great-grandson Chavis was not only family but also her dearest friend; there wasn’t a day that passed without laughter and playful teasing between them. She shared an equally special bond with Kove, affectionately calling him “her baby.” They spent endless hours playing monster trucks and singing Jesus Loves Me. As the former owner of a salvage store in Granite Falls, she made countless friends, many of whom still remember her by name.

She is survived by her great-granddaughters Courtney Simmons (Shaun) and Madison Smart; her great-great-grandchildren, they were her babies, Chavis Lingerfelt and Kove Simmons; her children, Shannon Smart, Beverly Fleming, Gayle Stout, Mike Smart (Robin), Forrest Smart and April Bailey; her siblings, Polly Smith and Glenn Floyd; and MANY, MANY other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bishop Smart; her son, Melvin Smart; and her siblings, Luther Floyd, Evenlyn, and Jay.

Nanny’s life was one well-lived—a legacy of faith, family, resilience, laughter, and love that will continue to inspire generations to come.

The celebration of life will be 3:00 PM on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at Four Points Church, 1410 Dustin Lane, Granite Falls, NC, 28602.
