Judith West Abernethy, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones on Monday, August 7, 2023. Judith was born June 10, 1942, in Richlands, Virginia to the late Harry and Hazel West. Judith was an avid reader who loved sewing, gardening, and spending time with her family. Her family was the highlight of her life. She raised her children to be strong, independent, and loving people. Judy took care of her grandchildren as her own, happily taking them to school, doctors' appointments, or simply listening. She was first a wife, second a mom, and third, the best grandmother anyone could ask for. Judy was a devoted mentor and friend. She welcomed the homeless into her home for Thanksgiving, and donated monthly to children’s organizations. She enjoyed sharing her talents of flowers, cooking, sewing, and love to every person she met. Her children and grandchildren learned so much from her by simply observing her commitment to creating a happy, beautiful, and loving environment. She always had a kitchen full of food for her children (grand and great included) and a comfortable bed to stay in at night. Judy was the epitome of an angel on earth, and will forever be remembered that way by her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Billy Abernethy, daughter Cindy (Bob) Howes, and daughter Beth (Greg) Wootton; grandchildren; Krysta (Alex) Perkins, Brittany (Ryan) Suttles, Taylor (Chris) Dover, and Erin Wootton; great grandchildren; Gen, Cade, Grant, Mia, Emmy, Teddy, Killian, and Skye.
Judith is preceded in death by her son, Chris Coxton; parents Harry and Hazel Jackson West; siblings Gerry Spraker, Kay Beavers, Raymond West, and Shelby Matney.
The family will receive friends at 875 20th Avenue Drive NW, Hickory, NC 28601. Instead of a funeral, Judith wished for a Celebration of Life. The celebration will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, August 26 at 875 20th Avenue Drive NW, Hickory, NC 28601. Casual Attire is requested by the family.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital at https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html (https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html).
We will all dearly miss the outgoing, generous, and loving woman who was at the center of our family. Until we meet again.
