Lori Marie Thornton, born October 21, 1962, at The Anthony N. Brady Maternity Hospital in Albany, New York, passed away surrounded by the love of the family who meant everything to her.
Lori was raised in Colonie, New York, and later proudly embraced life as a military wife while living in Fulda, Germany. She also made a home in Rome, New York, before eventually returning to Colonie and later settling in Hickory, North Carolina. No matter where she lived, she built lasting friendships and made every place feel like home.
She was the beloved daughter of the late Bill Shatraw and Margaret Shatraw. Lori shared a lifelong bond with her siblings Tracy, Billy, and her sister Kathy, who preceded her in death. Family was always at the center of her world.
She is survived by her loving husband, Thomas Patrick; her sons, Thomas James and Joshua Peter; her two cherished grandsons, Shane Caleb and Benton Gregory; her mother, Margaret Shatraw; her siblings Tracy and Billy; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Her family was her proudest accomplishment and greatest joy. She never missed an opportunity to gather everyone together, snap a photo, and proudly share it with anyone who would look. Her life truly revolved around her family.
Lori was the kindest soul—an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the San Francisco 49ers, a proud member of her local Elks Club, and a friend to everyone she met. She had a special love for tie-dye, fishing, traveling, and being near the water. Whether it was a quiet day fishing or simply sitting together after school or work, Lori treasured time spent with those she loved.
Her faith and dedication to her community were evident throughout her life. She served as a Church School teacher at St. Peter’s in Rome, New York, was deeply involved in school functions and community events, and always made time to lend a listening ear. There was never a moment when she wouldn’t sit and listen to your entire day, offering comfort, encouragement, and unconditional love.
A woman of perseverance and strength, Lori earned her GED and worked for 18 years at MetLife Insurance. Even in retirement, she continued to serve her community as a hall monitor at South Colonie High School. To the students, she was simply “Mrs. Thornton”—and if you greeted her with a “Hi, Mrs. Thornton,” you were likely rewarded with one of her famous lollipops and a warm smile.
Lori’s impact cannot be measured in years but in the countless lives she touched with her generosity, warmth, and big heart. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family. Her kindness will continue to ripple through the lives of all who were blessed to know her.
