Madeline Anne Carraway Powell, 78, of Hickory, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born May 31, 1947, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late William Robert Carraway and Madeline Doris Cronin Carraway.
Madeline was a strong and resilient woman who faced life’s challenges head-on. After losing her husband in 1996, she raised her three children on her own, meeting every obstacle with determination and love. She found joy in the simple things—getting lost in a good Nora Roberts or J.D. Robb novel and reading with her grandchildren; helping them discover the magic of books for themselves. She loved coloring, especially when her granddaughter joined in, making it a special time they shared. Madeline will be remembered for her strength, her love of family, and the countless moments of kindness she gave so freely. She will be deeply missed and always loved.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Allen (Paul) of Hickory; her son, Jason Powell (Kimberly) of Hickory; her grandchildren, Thomas Powell of Valdese, Jacob Powell of Valdese, and Haiden Allen of Hickory; her great-grandson, Waylon Powell of Valdese; and her siblings, Antoinette "Toni," William "Billy," Kathy, Angela, Robert, Carolyn, Barbara, and Eileen.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Powell; her daughter, Laura Jean Hyler; and her siblings, Steven, Larry, and John Carraway.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
