Matthew Welch

Matthew Neal Welch, 51, of Hickory passed away Sunday, November 10, 2024, at his home. Born January 2nd, 1973, he was the son of Jerry Long Welch and the late Vickie Delores Welch.

Matthew was a gifted artist, skilled woodworker, devoted homemaker, and the best stay-at-home dad and teacher. His talents seemed limitless, and he had an exceptional ability to learn any skill or craft with ease, mastering it faster and better than anyone. Whatever he put his hands to, he did it with passion, creativity, and an undeniable knack for perfection. Matthew was truly a special person and will be greatly missed by those who loved him.

He is survived by his wife and soulmate of 20 years, Mara Russell Welch of the home; his three sons, Dominique Link-Kelley (Virginia) of Salisbury, Hayden Russell (Christine) of Arizona, and his best buddy, Nathanial Welch of Hickory. Matthew also leaves behind his dad Jerry Welch and his siblings, "the favorite" Nicole Mosley (Billy) of Shelby, his devoted brother Jon (Crystal) of Lawndale, and his brother Christopher Welch. He was cherished by his beloved fur babies Lucy and Toby; his second set of parents, Michael and Edna Russell of Graham; and his precious nieces and nephews, Julie, Aaron, Jed, Laney, and Riley. He also leaves behind amazing friends who were like brothers to him: Bill Ewing (Emily) of Lawndale, Brandon Elliott (Adrienne) of Mebane, Brent Fulbright (Teresa) of Vale, Greg Cook (Jan) of Vale, and Zach Quickel (Nick) of Charlotte.

In addition to his mom, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law Trish Welch.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, November 30, 2024.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society .
