Maurice “Paul” Mason died peacefully on Christmas Eve, at the age of 100. Born on July 4th, 1925, in Gastonia, North Carolina, Paul lived a full life defined by faith, family, service to others and a strong work ethic. He was the beloved husband of the late Edith Ray Mason, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage.
Paul proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, aboard the aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto in the South Pacific, where he served alongside future President George Bush Sr. He was a longtime member of Stevens Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years.
Paul is survived by his children Steve Mason (Grace), Donna Mason Hayes and Marty Mason (Jo Anne). He is also survived by his grandchildren Scott Mason, Sarah Mitchell (Ryan), and Anne Matesich (Chris) and two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Mitchell and Kip Matesich, along with a number of nieces and nephews. He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted friends and caregivers, Barbara Sells and Ginger Southard.
In addition to his wife, Paul was preceded in death by his parents Luther and Elsie Mason, his brothers James and Joe Mason, his sister Helen Humble, and his son-in-law Eddie Hayes.
A graveside service will be held at Lakeview Memorial Park, 3600 North O’Henry Blvd (off Hwy 29 North), Greensboro, NC on Tuesday, January 20th at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Stevens Memorial Baptist Church, 3001 North Church St. Greensboro, NC 27405
