Roberta Long

Roberta "Susie" Shuford Long, 83, of Hickory passed away Sunday, March 3, 2024. Born November 5th, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Edmund Showalter Long and Roberta Shuford Long. Susie was a distinguished 1963 graduate of Lenoir Rhyne University with a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Medical Science. As a devoted member of Chi Beta Phi, she served as both Secretary and Vice President. Post-graduation, Susie’s journey led her to the family-owned radio station WHKY in Hickory, NC, where she served as the bookkeeper. She remained an integral part of the station and was Co-owner at the time of her passing. She loved spending time at station events and sharing the history of the station and the many stories she recalled from her time at WHKY.

She served as the organist/pianist at Corinth Baptist Church in Vale, NC, where she dedicated over 30 years to sharing her love for the Lord and her church family. Susie’s remarkable gift of perfect pitch allowed her to play any instrument she was given to play. Beyond her musical talents, Susie was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, cherishing her family’s rich history. Her absence leaves a void at WHKY, Corinth Baptist Church, and in the hearts of all who were touched by her warmth, passion, and countless stories. She will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her two nephews Tom Long Jr (Linda) Of Hickory and Jeff Long (Joyce) of Hickory; a niece Carol Long Wolfe (Karl) of Flat Rock; two great-nephews Chris Long (Amanda) of Charleston, SC, and Charles Long (Heather) of Chicago, IL., eight great-great nieces and nephews; and one great-great-great nephew.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother Tom Long Sr.

The memorial service will be at 3:00 PM, on Sunday, March 10, 2024, with Rev. William Kanupp officiating the service at Corinth Baptist Church, 7929 NC-10 Hwy, Vale, NC 28168.
