With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Sylvia Hill Whitt, who passed away peacefully on May 21st, 2026, at the age of 89.
Born and raised in Winston-Salem, Sylvia married her high school sweetheart, Harold Robert Whitt, and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this past December — a beautiful testament to a lifetime of love, devotion, and partnership.
Sylvia graduated from High Point University and went on to become a dedicated teacher in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System, where she taught for over 25 years. Her love for teaching and commitment to her students earned her the honor of being named Teacher of the Year in 1999.
While living in Winston-Salem, Sylvia was actively involved at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and formed cherished friendships. She also shared her love of music by teaching piano lessons and spent many years mentoring young people through the local 4-H program.
With the arrival of grandchildren, Sylvia and Harold moved to Davidson, where they became active members of Davidson United Methodist Church. There, Sylvia devoted herself to volunteering, tutoring children, participating in the Mizpah Circle, and enjoying fellowship through DUMC’s Primetimers group.
Sylvia cherished her family. Being “Oma” was one of her greatest joys, and she poured endless love, attention, and encouragement into the lives of her children and grandchildren. She embraced life fully and found joy in serving others, gardening, bowling, reading (especially David Baldacci novels), working crossword puzzles, traveling, and spending treasured time with family and friends. She was an avid fan of the Carolina Tarheels and never missed watching the basketball games she enjoyed so much.
Sylvia’s family finds comfort in knowing she leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service to others. She had a gift for making people feel cared for and valued, and did so even through her final days. Her steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Harold, and her daughters, Christi Slayton (Randy) and Tracey McKee (Chris), as well as her granddaughters, Addison and Meredith McKee. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Sue Hill, Drama Whitt, and Jean Whitt, nieces Mandy Burnette, Suzanne Brant, and Holly Nguyen (Wayne), and nephew Kelly Hill (Deette). She leaves behind several great nieces and nephews. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Edith Hill, brother, Wayne, and brothers-in-law, Jerry Whitt and Ronnie Whitt.
The family wishes to thank all those who, in recent years, supported and cared for her with such kindness and compassion.
A drop-in reception to celebrate Sylvia's life will be held on Saturday, June 27th, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at The Venues, 554 Langtree Road, Mooresville, NC.
